Previous Blüthner Results
A 6ft 3in grand piano in a mahogany and crossbanded case on dual square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 8 – BLÜTHNER GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good condition, although there is significant fade to the bass side and the top lid has a little polish breakdown and again quite significant fade. This will need to be dealt with in order for this piano to reach its full potential visually. There is a piece of veneer missing from the treble cheek block – it is included along with a key, so the piece of veneer is not missing but it has become detached and will need to be re-glued.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. The piano has been re-built to a very high standard. The pins are good and everything is very clean. The quality of work done is very high.
Keys and Keyboard: Are a modern plastics material – they have been replaced and again have been done to a good standard.
Hammers and Action: Are in very good condition. It is my opinion that this is a replacement action – it is badged ‘Herberger and Brooks’.
General Notes: Overall, the work done to this piano is of a very high standard and it needs nothing more than the attentions of a competent polisher.

Condition Report:
LOT 23 – BLÜTHNER GRAND

Frame and Soundboard: Are in excellent condition also.
Keys and Keyboard: Are ivory – and very good.
Hammers and Action: Are also good. The piano plays beautifully.

A 5ft 5in Model 10 grand piano in a bright mahogany case on square tapered legs; together with an adjustable stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 27 – BLÜTHNER MODEL 10 GRAND
PLEASE NOTE: IS IN A BRIGHT MAHOGANY CASE
Casework: Is in excellent condition – there are one or two areas of finger marks and dirt but nothing to worry about.
Frame and Soundboard: Are excellent – as you would expect. This is an Aliquot patent model.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in excellent condition – modern plastics.
Hammers and Action: Are in good condition and the piano plays nicely. However, there is some rattling and a little play in the action.
General Notes: This is a very nice piano, in very good order and apart from tuning and regulation to taste, needs nothing.

A 4ft 11in grand piano in a carved Adam style French walnut case, on dual square tapered fluted legs; together with a stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 34 – BLÜTHNER GRAND
Casework: The case is in generally good condition, although a little dry – it could do with perhaps waxing to bring out its best. There are two very small and nicely executed repairs to the lock rail and the fall, presumably the replacement of a lock that has now gone.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good, although the soundboard and piano internally is very dusty. There is a split to the soundboard, just forward of the bridge – this is having no discernible effect on the sound.
Keys and Keyboard: The keys, we suspect, are ivory – they are in good condition and could do with a little clean and there is one new keytop, which is obvious to the eye, although it has been applied very well.
Hammers and Action: Are in line with the rest of the piano – dusty and could do with a little attention but there are no major issues.
General Notes: This has the potential to be a very fine and decorative piano.

A 5ft grand piano in a walnut case on square tapered legs; together with a duet stool on cabriole legs. This instrument has been restored in the past.
Condition Report:
LOT 56 – BLÜTHNER GRAND
Casework: Is generally good, although there is a little fading and there is certainly scratching to the fall. There are one or two scratches in various places.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. This piano looks as if it has been re-strung at some point in the recent past.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good and are ivory.
Hammers and Action: Are currently not working well – the hammers are blocking and this action will need attention. Upon close inspection, we think that one of the stanchions on the action is ruptured (i.e. broken) and this is causing a lack of alignment between hammer and string.

A 6ft 3in grand piano in an bright ebonised case on turned and fluted legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 66 – BLÜTHNER GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good condition and will have been re-polished at some point on the last 20 or 30 years. There are a few areas of damage on seams, most notably to the bass end cheek block and there are one or two dings and dents, nicks and general scratches which you get on these bright finishes. The top lid has a haze of scratches which will easily be buffed. There is slight movement – there has been a disagreement between the base wood and the polish on the foldback lid, but this is not noticeable in anything other than harsh light.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. The soundboard has evidence of competently executed shims. The piano is very clean in this area. It is Aliquot Patent.
Keys and Keyboard: Ivory – one-piece – and is in generally good order, a little yellowing and could do with a clean, but is very presentable.
Hammers and Action: Are good. This action was obviously re-built and it is of the original L-Spring Patent type.
General Notes: This piano is in short a potentially lovely instrument that needs very little. It has the Blüthner characteristics.

LOT 70 – BLÜTHNER PHOENIX GRAND

Frame and Soundboard: Are also excellent, incorporating the innovations outlined in the catalogue description.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in very good order – a modern plastic covering.
Hammers and Action: The action is of the composite type and the hammers are in very good condition.
General Notes: This is a beautiful piano and it sounds absolutely wonderful.

A 6ft 3in Model 6 grand piano in a bright ebonised case on turned octagonal legs; together with a stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 78 – BLÜTHNER MODEL 6 GRAND
PLEASE NOTE: IS TOGETHER WITH A STOOL.
Casework: Is in good order – nothing more than a dust required. This is an attractive case and it is particularly unusual to find ornamental legs on such a modern instrument.
Frame and Soundboard: Are in very good condition and need nothing more than a dust.
Keys and Keyboard: Are likewise, in excellent condition – just a light clean required. The covering is modern plastic.
Hammers and Action: Are in good condition. This is a Renner action at this date. Please note: although the piano is marked on the frame as having the Aliquot Patent, this particular string arrangement is not present on this instrument, so this is a more conventional layout.

What You Should Know About Blüthner
Blüthner were also established in 1853 and like Bechstein, their heyday was prior to the 1914-1918 war. There was a huge competition between the two brands. Blüthner had the reputation of a more sonorous sound, compared with the strident Germanic tone of Bechstein. In the 1930s, the smaller Blüthner grands became very popular in England and they still command a good auction price. They are still made and almost re-invented themselves after Eastern Germany, which is where they were made, collapsed. The modern instruments attract very high auction prices.

A 6ft 3in grand piano in a rosewood case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 2 – BLÜTHNER GRAND
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS 6FT 3IN AND NOT 5FT 9IN
Casework: Is perfectly acceptable but tired in areas – there are light scratches on quite a few of the top surfaces but nothing serious.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good but please note that the soundboard is very dirty and could do with a clean, as indeed could the entirety of the frame.
Keys and Keyboard: Are ivory – they are good – there is one repair in the middle which is noticeable but the rest are good.
Hammers and Action: Are acceptable but there is sluggishness in the action, which suggests a certain amount of damp in its previous home and this will need the attentions of a tuner. This is further reinforced because there is a damp chaser fitted in the keyboard area, with a plug exiting at the side of the piano. This has Aliquot patent but it has a standard roller action.
General Notes: This is potentially a nice instrument but needs a little work.
