A 9ft Model I grand piano in a bright ebonised case on turned octagonal tapered legs and is on an ‘A’ frame.

Condition Report:

LOT 143 – BECHSTEIN GRAND

PLEASE NOTE: IS 9FT MODEL I NOT 7FT 8IN MODEL III AND IS SITTING ON AN ‘A’ FRAME.

Casework:  Is in generally good condition.  This piano has been re-polished at some point in the last 20 or 30 years but there are areas of damage - particularly those to note, at each end of the front rail of the keyboard there is damage which is covered with Gaffa tape, to the front corner treble end and front corner at bass end and there is an impact mark just inward of the bass cheek block on the key slip.  The rest of the piano has the surface scratching that we associate with these high gloss polyester finishes.  There are one or two impact marks to the lid, little bits of missing veneer with exposed wood underneath and as I walk round the piano, there are one or two more impact marks to the lid at the back, one or two scratches on the top surface, which are a little deeper than can be just buffed out, so a little damage in various areas and leading edges, but overall the piano still looks good.  Please note: if you wanted to remove this piano from the ‘A’ frame, you would need to have castors fitted to these turned octagonal legs because they are now missing – the ‘A’ frame does the job well but the castors are missing.

Frame and Soundboard:  Are excellent.  This piano has been re-built to a very good standard – they have used the correct colour bearing cloth and you can see honest and well executed shims on the soundboard.

Keys and Keyboard:  The keyboard is a modern plastic covering – it has been done to a good standard and the keyboard is nice and even and the piano plays nicely.

Hammers and Action:  Are also very good.  This piano has a very powerful sound.  Just to note, obviously as part of the process of re-building, these pins are all blue steel, the wrest plank is exposed and I can see no cracks.  Please note: there is a sticking note at the very top, the very last note in the treble is intermittent and this is going to be a very easy problem to solve - it will just be simply regulation.

General Notes:  This is a lovely sounding piano and a lot of piano for the money.
