Condition Report:
LOT 139 – STEINWAY VERTEGRAND UPRIGHT
PLEASE NOTE: THE NUMBER THAT SEEMS TO MAKE SENSE IS ONE WE HAVE FOUND BEHIND THE FALL , WHICH WOULD DATE THE PIANO TO c1906.
Casework: Is in acceptable condition, rather dull and could do with a revive in places, but there are no major areas of damage.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. This piano has obviously been restored to a good standard in the past but there is evidence of what I can only describe as eccentric attempts to deaden vibrations, so there are bits of felt which have been glued to the frame in various places and there is a piece of wood jammed between the frame and one of the stanchions. There are also, and I presume this is to ease keyboard movement, pieces of felt jammed between certain keys. As I say, this is either an ingenious attempt to ameliorate various problems, but I am not certain. There seems also to have been a mouse living under the keyboard, so this keyboard will need to be taken out and the piano key bed given a good vacuum.
Keys and Keyboard: Are a little yellowed – there are one or two damaged keys but nothing serious.
Hammers and Action: Are good. This piano has been re-built to a good standard.
General Notes: This is a nice piano. Apart from cleaning and a little investigation, this will be a very nice instrument. It sounds magnificent.
