Lot 22 – Steinway (c1910s) Grand Piano – | Est. £10,000-£15,000 plus VAT

A 6ft 11in (211cm) Model B grand piano in a rosewood case on turned and reeded legs. The instrument was reconditioned and supplied by Steinway in the very early 1970s. Owned by the National Trust and formerly displayed at Lanhydrock, this piano is being sold to support the redisplay of the property’s showrooms for public benefit. It was originally acquired for practical and decorative use in presentations and musical recitals, and is not part of the historic collection. This Lot is subject to VAT.
We are informed by the vendor that this piano was reconditioned and supplied by Steinway in the very early 1970s. The case is in generally acceptable condition and was obviously re-finished at the same time as the rest of the work was done in the 1970s. This has faded to an attractive honey colour. There are 1 or 2 small areas of veneer loss and several impact marks and blemishes. This piano has an unusual lid arrangement. The lid has been deliberately split on the bass side and then re-hinged with a portion of the lid remaining on top of the piano. This is presumably a safety feature. It does not detract in any way from the overall look and is entirely deliberate. The frame, stringing, soundboard and bridges are good, although there is a little corrosion to the treble stringing and some of the pins. The action functions very nicely and looks to be in good condition but further investigation will be required in order to ascertain the condition of the all important action rails. The keyboard is in good condition and the material used for covering is ivory. This piano has a magnificent sound and plays very nicely indeed. My guess is that with a little cleaning, it can be left as is and enjoyed but if restoration is your thing, then you will be richly rewarded.
