History of Schimmel Pianos

Schimmel was founded in 1885 by Wilhelm Schimmel in Leipzig, Germany. The first piano was built in a small workshop but from there, the company grew in leaps and bounds with Wilhelm’s younger brother Fridolin founding his own piano factory in America in the 1890s under the name Schimmel and Nelson.

In 1898, Schimmel received its first award for the quality of their pianos, and in 1899, made royal connections with His Majesty the Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst Karl of Saxony Weimar-Eisenach when Wilhelm was invited to deliver a piano to the royal house. By 1925, Schimmel had become a renowned piano manufacturing name across the world, an honour that continues to this day.

Where it all began

Wilhelm Schimmel, a talented piano maker and innovator, set out to create instruments that would embody the German tradition of piano craftsmanship. His passion for perfection and dedication to producing pianos of the highest standards laid the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most respected piano brands.

In its early years, Schimmel focused on refining and perfecting traditional piano manufacturing techniques. The company quickly gained recognition for the superior quality of its instruments, and Schimmel pianos became highly sought after by pianists, music institutions, and enthusiasts alike.

Exceptional Quality

As the company grew, Schimmel continued to innovate and introduce new advancements to their piano designs. In the early 20th century, Wilhelm Schimmel’s son, Wilhelm Arno Schimmel, took over the reins of the company and brought his own creative vision to piano manufacturing. Under his leadership, Schimmel pianos began to incorporate new materials and manufacturing methods to enhance their instruments’ tonal qualities and performance.

One notable innovation introduced by Schimmel was the use of a patented soundboard design known as the “Tapered Soundboard.” This innovative construction technique allowed for greater tonal projection and improved resonance, resulting in a distinct and rich sound that became synonymous with Schimmel pianos.

Expert Craftsmanship

Schimmel pianos also gained recognition for their exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. Skilled artisans meticulously crafted each instrument, ensuring that it met the highest standards of quality. From the selection of premium woods to the hand-voicing of the hammers, every aspect of the piano’s construction was meticulously executed.

The commitment to excellence and the pursuit of perfection earned Schimmel pianos numerous awards and accolades over the years. The company’s dedication to quality was further exemplified by its collaboration with renowned pianists and institutions, including partnerships with prestigious music schools and concert halls around the world.

Embracing Technology

In the late 20th century, Schimmel expanded its product range to include a variety of grand and upright pianos, offering instruments that catered to different musical preferences and needs. The company also embraced technological advancements, incorporating computer-aided design and manufacturing processes to ensure precision and consistency in their piano production.

Prestige

Today, Schimmel pianos continue to be revered for their exceptional sound quality, refined craftsmanship, and elegant design. The company remains family-owned and is now led by the fourth generation of the Schimmel family, continuing the legacy of producing pianos of the highest calibre.

Schimmel’s commitment to quality and innovation has positioned the brand as one of the leading piano manufacturers worldwide. Their instruments can be found in concert halls, music conservatories, and homes of discerning pianists and enthusiasts around the globe.
