Previous Steinway Results
A 6ft 11in Model B grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with an adjustable stool. This piano has been fully restored in the past.
Condition Report:
LOT 15 – STEINWAY MODEL B GRAND
Casework: Is good, if a little grubby and could do with a clean. There are one or two surface scratches on the top but these are very light and easy to buff out.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. There is evidence of shim work or indeed at least soundboard work. Of note is the Steinway & Sons Piano Manufacturers to Her Majesty The Queen of England, Their Royal Highnesses The Price of Wales and The Princess of Wales, which presumably was a patriotic statement after the Great War.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – ivory. There is a little yellowing but it is very acceptable.
Hammers and Action: Are good. The action looks as if it has had major work, if not actually a complete replacement – the action is very clean.
General Notes: This piano, apart from a good general buff and clean, is ready to go.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A Model K upright piano in a mahogany case; together with a duet stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 18 – STEINWAY MODEL K UPRIGHT
Casework: Is in acceptable condition. There are one or two areas of rubbing and one or two very minor impact marks, but nothing serious.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good – a little dirty. This piano could do with a clean and a little attention in this area, nothing more I suspect than cosmetic.
Keys and Keyboard: Are ivory – they are in good condition, although one or two have been off and there appears to be a little discolouration.
Hammers and Action: Are all working. There have been some localised repairs, but now might be a time for more work. Everything is working well and the piano sounds remarkably nice.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A 5ft 1in Model S grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with a stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 20 – STEINWAY MODEL S GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good order but like all polyester, the top lid certainly has a haze of scratches – this is fairly straightforward to buff. There is also an easily buffable scratch to the front of the music rest and the area around the top lock rail has got a little bit of polyester movement. There is also polyester movement at the bass end to the side of the piano and another little area at treble cheek block. There is a little ‘ding’ at the top of the music rest.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good – the piano could do with a little clean but other than that everything is in very sound condition.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in very good order – they are a replacement plastic material.
Hammers and Action: Are very good. This piano plays nicely and sounds beautiful.

A 7ft 5in 88-note Model C grand piano in a rosewood case on turned fluted legs. This instrument has recently been reconditioned with frame, soundboard, new strings and pins.
Condition Report:
LOT 25 – STEINWAY MODEL C GRAND
Casework: Is acceptable but tired in places. There are a number of veneer repairs which are obvious to the eye and indeed areas where the veneer is missing. There are small areas of damage generally all round the case and there is a little moulding missing at the bass end cheek block on the outer edge. Apart from that, the case is generally good but could do with a revive and repair in places.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good and this work has been done to a good standard, although there are two dampers missing, the final two wound notes in the bass – these dampers will need to be replaced. The frame has been re-gilded to a good standard and the soundboard has evidence of shims which have been undertaken with skill.
Keys and Keyboard: The keyboard is ivory and the condition is generally good but there is yellowing and perhaps this could now be replaced.
Hammers and Action: The action appears to be original – it will have had re-build work done to it and the hammers are in good condition.
General Notes: So internally, the frame and soundboard, pinning and stringing have been done. The action is now ready for a little work and this piano could do with a regulation. There are, as I say, two dampers missing in the bass end.

A 5ft 7in Model M grand piano in a mahogany case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT – 28 STEINWAY 5FT 7IN MODEL M GRAND
Casework: The case is in good condition. There is a little fading to the top lid but generally the polish is acceptable
Frame and Soundboard: The frame and soundboard are good. There is the very faintest beginnings of a split in the soundboard but this can be ignored.
Keys and Keyboard: The keys and keyboard are good, the material used is ivory. There is a single crack and a single chip to two separate keys but otherwise the keyboard is in good order.
Hammers and Action: The action is dusty but good. The hammers are good if a little squared
General Notes: This piano is solid and needs very little work to make it nice.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

An upright piano in a rosewood case.
Condition Report:
LOT 33 – STEINWAY UPRIGHT
PLEASE NOTE: IS A VERTEGRAND AND IS IN A MAHOGANY CASE
Casework: Is acceptable but there are a few areas of damage to the front rail and leading edges.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. The bass bridge has some tiny splits which seem to be having no effect whatsoever on its ability to hold tune.
Keys and Keyboard: Are ivory, one piece – in good condition but have a little of what I call foxing or spotting.
Hammers and Action: Are good. This piano has obviously had action work at some point and this has been done to a good standard.
General Notes: This piano plays nicely and has the potential to be a very good instrument.

Casework: Is in excellent condition, as you would expect. There are one or two very faint scratches to the top lid but nothing of note.
Frame and Soundboard: Are excellent. The gilding has been done to a good standard. The soundboard is good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in good condition – they are ivory.
Hammers and Action: Are likewise, good, and have received major attention. This piano plays beautifully.

A Model E upright piano in an ebonised and floral inlaid case.
Condition Report:
LOT 43 – STEINWAY MODEL E UPRIGHT
Casework: Is in generally good condition, although there are one or two repairs. There is a very crude piece of moulding at the back of the top lid which has replaced a missing piece and there are one or two smaller pieces of moulding missing from the top of the pilasters.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. The strings in the central section and the bass have been replaced at some point recently. There are one or two new strings in the treble, but overall, this piano sounds good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are ivory and in good condition.
Hammers and Action: Are good. This piano has obviously had restoration work done as required. It plays well and sounds good.

A 5ft 7in New York Model M grand piano in an ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with an adjustable stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 50 – STEINWAY NEW YORK MODEL M GRAND
Casework: Is in acceptable condition, although tired in areas. There are points on the piano, notably the cheek blocks, where the polish has worn away to reveal the base wood. There is also a little rubbing damage to the key slip and one or two scratches and marks about the piano in general but nothing that is terribly noticeable.
Frame and Soundboard: Are very good and this piano looks as if it has had fairly major rebuild work done within the last 30 or 40 years, to a good standard.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in good condition – one piece ivory.
Hammers and Action: Are good, although there is a little regulation required. There are one or two intermittently sticking notes and there is what we refer to as a ‘bubbling’ in the lower treble and upper tenor – this is easy to rectify.
General Notes: This piano sounds very good and plays very nicely and has the potential to be a super instrument.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

What You Should Know About Steinway
Steinway is probably the best known of all brands. Established in 1853 in America, it makes expensive upright and grand pianos. It has two factories – one in Hamburg and one in New York. Most of the pianos in the United Kingdom come from Hamburg. They still attract very high prices in auction.

A 7ft 3½in 85-note Model C grand piano in rosewood case on turned tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 10 – STEINWAY MODEL C GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good order. It has been refinished at some point in an open grain technique. There is no significant damage and the piano looks very good.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good, although the soundboard does have a number of splits – these are having no bearing on the sound but are unsightly.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in good order – ivory coverings. There is very faint yellowing but it is uniform.
Hammers and Action: Look in generally good condition. The piano plays very well and has a magnificent bass.
