A piano by Grotrian-Steinweg

Grotrian-Steinweg

A sister maker to Steinway. Independent since 1865, still hand-built in Germany.

About Grotrian-Steinweg.

Grotrian-Steinweg shares its origins with Steinway & Sons, Heinrich Steinweg’s eldest son founded the German company in 1835 with Friedrich Grotrian. The Steinweg family later emigrated to New York and founded Steinway; the Grotrians stayed in Braunschweig.

For decades the two firms shared design philosophy. Today Grotrian-Steinweg builds approximately 500 instruments a year, every one in Braunschweig, by hand.

A different but equally noble line of German concert grands.

The Grotrian-Steinweg history.

Grotrian-Steinweg shares its origins with Steinway & Sons.

1835

A shared beginning.

Heinrich Steinweg established the firm in Germany, building pianos that would lay the foundations for one of the most famous names in the instrument’s history. Friedrich Grotrian later joined the business as a partner.

1865

Two paths diverge.

When Heinrich Steinweg and most of his sons emigrated to New York to found Steinway & Sons, the German company continued under the Grotrian and remaining Steinweg families, carrying forward the original design philosophy.

1895

A name to defend.

The shared heritage led to a long-running dispute over the Steinweg name. Grotrian-Steinweg continued to build instruments of the highest quality, earning its own reputation across Europe through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

1950

A distinct voice.

In the post-war decades Grotrian-Steinweg established a clear identity of its own, its concert grands prized for a warm, singing German tone distinct from that of its American cousin.

Today

Hand-built in Braunschweig.

Grotrian-Steinweg still builds every instrument by hand in Braunschweig, producing a noble line of German concert grands that traces its lineage back to the very origins of Steinway itself.
