The August Förster history.

August Förster has been built in the small Saxon town of Löbau since 1859, when Friedrich August Förster established the workshop that still bears his name.

1859

Founded in Löbau.

Friedrich August Förster opened his workshop in the Saxon town of Löbau, building pianos entirely by hand. The firm’s commitment to craft over volume was established from the very beginning.

1900

A chamber music favourite.

August Förster instruments earned a devoted following among chamber musicians, prized for a warm, deep bass and a singing treble that suited intimate ensembles and the recording studio alike.

1945

Behind the curtain.

Through the division of Germany the Löbau factory found itself in the east, yet the Förster family retained the workshop and its traditions, continuing to build by hand throughout the difficult post-war decades.

1990

A new chapter.

With reunification the firm returned fully to family control and reaffirmed its commitment to small-batch, hand-built production, its instruments once again sought out by discerning players across the world.

Today

Still in the family.

August Förster remains in the original Förster family, hand-building around two hundred instruments a year in Löbau, each one carrying the rich, lyrical voice for which the firm has long been loved.
