Lot 94 – Bechstein (c1928) Grand Piano – | Est. £1,000-£1,500

The case is in generally acceptable condition and has been re-polished to a reasonable standard at some point in the past. There are a few blemishes, small scratches, minor dings and dents but nothing that spoils the overall look. As with a lot of these London Bechsteins, the screw-in square tapered legs are not aligning and this is most noticeable with the bass leg, although the treble leg is joining in the fun. My recommendation is that a cardboard spacer be placed between leg and body of piano before it is set up, in order to remedy this problem. The frame is good but there is discolouration and a certain amount of gilding loss. The soundboard is good but a little dirty. The bridges are acceptable but again are a little dirty and there is an area of what looks like ink spillage in the very top treble, that has contaminated the soundboard and the bridge in this area, although there is no problem with the structure of the bridge itself. The stringing is acceptable – there are 1 or 2 new strings in the bass section, which are obvious. There is also a certain amount of dirt and dust around the pins. The action appears to be solid but the hammers will benefit from re-shaping. The keyboard is in good condition and the material used for covering is grained celluloid. There is a certain amount of sideways play.
