Lot 86: Broadwood (c1824) – | Est. £1,000 – £1,500 – Amendment

A 7ft 8in grand piano in a rosewood case supported on reeded legs.
A 7ft 8in grand piano in a rosewood case supported on reeded legs. Condition Report: Broadwood Grand The case is in acceptable condition particularly when one considers that this is a 200-year-old item. Some of the moulding is missing from the tops of the legs and there is moulding missing from the edges of the lid and various other parts. Otherwise, all the detail is largely intact. There is a little bit of movement to the rim on the bass side but nothing more serious structurally. The stringing is bichord wound to the usual place and trichord thereafter. There are one or two broken strings in the bass section. This instrument has a non-original lid prop with the original much shorter prop still present on its original hinge. The soundboard is largely intact and has been restored at some point in the very distant past but is now showing splits again. The bridges are two-piece or split. These are intact and in reasonable condition. The action is the English type, and everything appears to be present although the action is largely not functioning, and this will need investigation. The name Murray is written in ink on the action, and this may well mean something to an aficionado. The keyboard is in good order, of course yellowing and dishing to the ivory key tops, but everything is present and correct. A fascinating instrument that will bear scrutiny and investigation and will be worth the time and effort involved in restoration. This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.
