A 7ft 10in double manual harpsichord in a green and madder painted case, with gilt banding and floral sprays, raised on square legs. Condition Report: Lot 63 – Thomas Kilpatrick Harpsichord The case is in good condition. There are one or two areas of minor paint loss and a general fade but this all adds to the attraction. The stringing and bridges are good. The soundboard is in good condition and there are no splits, although the surface has warped over time and there is now an ocean wave effect across the width of the soundboard. The bridges have remained in contact and have moved in sympathy. Harpsichord soundboards are vulnerable to this type of movement. No strings are touching the soundboard and everything still resonates as normal but a potential buyer will need to satisfy themselves and we would advise viewing, if you are thinking of buying this instrument. The action is good and functioning well. The jacks are plastic and the quills are made from Delrin. The keyboard is in good condition but by the time this instrument is on view the ivory key tops to the sharps will have been removed because they are ivory and in contravention of ivory laws. This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.
