Lot 58 – Steinway (c1907) Grand Piano – | Est. £7,000-£9,000

A 6ft 11in (211cm) Model B grand piano in a rosewood case on square tapered legs.
The case is in an acceptable but I would have to say rather tired condition. There are areas of obvious polish fade and there is a little polish breakdown. There are scratches, water marks, dings and dents – that kind of thing. There is also a piece of the music rest missing. It is an unusual music rest that looks as if it has been put in upside down but it is in fact meant to be like this. The top cresting section is missing and this will need to be repaired. It is my guess that this has been replaced at some point. The frame is good. There is discolouration, of course, but everything is as it should be. The soundboard is good but there are the odd shadow lines/striations which look like splits but are having no bearing on the sound. There is a more noticeable split under the bass strings but again, this can be ignored. The action is intact. The hammers are slightly squared. Once again, the condition of the all-important action rails will need to be ascertained. The keyboard is in reasonable condition and the material used for covering is ivory. A nice instrument that could conceivably be left as is and just given a little fettling. If, however, you are looking for a Model B with an 88-note compass to restore, from a very good period, this could be the one. For the connoisseur there is a delightful little paper label which says, ‘This instrument was maintained and tuned by P Reamsbottom, 33 Beech Grove, Brotton’ and his telephone number was Brotton 586.
