History of Petrof Pianos

Petrof was founded in 1864 by Antonin Petrof in the Czech Republic. In 1874, a new factory began on the production of harmoniums while in 1881, Petrof commenced with the production of keys and actions.

In 1883, the first upright piano was manufactured and as the company moved into the 20th century, they reaped the rewards of global expansion, opening offices in London, and exporting to Japan, China, Australia and South America.

Where it all began

Antonín Petrof was a talented piano maker and musician, and he set out to create instruments that would meet the highest standards of quality and musicality. With a small team of skilled craftsmen, Petrof began crafting pianos in his workshop, combining traditional European piano-making techniques with his own innovative ideas.

Exceptional Quality

From the start, Petrof pianos were recognised for their exceptional sound and beautiful design. The company quickly gained popularity, and by the end of the 19th century, Petrof pianos were being exported to countries around the world. Their reputation for excellence and the company’s commitment to continuous improvement led to numerous awards and recognition.

Innovations

During the early 20th century, Petrof expanded its operations and introduced several innovations to their piano designs. In the 1920s, they incorporated improvements to the action mechanism, enhancing the touch and responsiveness of their instruments. This dedication to innovation and craftsmanship propelled Petrof pianos to even greater heights.

However, the company faced significant challenges during the Second World War and the subsequent communist era in Czechoslovakia. Like many businesses at the time, Petrof was nationalised, and the family lost control of the company. Despite the difficult circumstances, the Petrof family managed to maintain a presence in the factory and continued to contribute to the piano-making process.

Embracing Technology

After the fall of communism in 1989, the Petrof family regained control of the company and focused on revitalising the brand. They implemented modern manufacturing techniques while staying true to the traditions that had made Petrof pianos renowned. The company expanded its product range to include a variety of grand and upright pianos, catering to the needs of pianists at every level.

In recent years, Petrof has embraced technological advancements to enhance the performance and capabilities of their instruments. They have incorporated computer-aided design and precision machinery to ensure the highest level of accuracy and consistency in their piano production.
