A square piano in a crossbanded and inlaid mahogany case on a frame stand with 4 square tapered legs, with brass caster and paterae.
Estimate £800 to £1,200
Plus a buyer's premium of 24% plus VAT (28.8%) on the hammer price.
Ivory: It is now illegal to sell a piano with an ivory keyboard dating post 1975 without an Ivory Registration Number. Pianos with ivory keyboards dating pre 1975 will have been registered with APHA on the government website. All pianos dating from 1947 to 1975 with ivory keys will have an Article 10 certificate in place.
The case has been nicely maintained and is in an attractive patinated condition with marks and blemishes commensurate with age. The frame stand has been inlaid ‘ensuite’ and is in good condition but will need a little ‘tightening up’.
The soundboard is acceptable but (entirely understandably) has splits forming. These can be ignored.
The stringing is again acceptable but there are broken strings and a certain amount of corrosion.
The bridge is in good condition and is of ‘hockey stick’ form.
The action has been well maintained and functions as well as can be expected. A shade board of recent manufacture (but similar to others seen on instruments made by Beyer) is present.
The keyboard is in good order – ivory (of course) has been employed for covering.
This intriguing instrument is in the manner of Adam Beyer and certainly the fall board decoration is nearly identical to other instruments from the Beyer workshop but, as a learned and highly patient friend and early keyboard authority has pointed out, strictly speaking, an Adam Byer instrument will have an ‘AB’ stamped on one of the tenon and mortice joints – this is absent on this instrument.
This instrument is, nonetheless, a wonderful survival at least in the manner of one of the most desirable late eighteenth century makers.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.
