The combination of a superbly crafted case together with the iconic Steinway name arguably made Lot 50 in our December 2012 sale one of the finest of instruments.

LOT 50 Steinway (c1898)

A fine 6ft 11in Model B grand piano in a marquetry and inlaid case decorated with musical trophies, floral garland and swag ornament raised on square tapered legs.

This piano is illustrated on the cover of ‘Grand Piano’ by Sidney Harrison, who previously owned this piano. He bought the piano from Steinway who had bought it back from its first owner. The current owner bought it through Phillips many years ago from the estate of Sidney Harrison; thus the piano has had only three owners from new. The piano was sold together with a copy of ‘Grand Piano’.
