Vernis Martin Style Art Cased Erard

Some of the great “Art Cased” pianos, much like master work paintings, are unique objects made with little regard to cost - such instruments are extraordinarily rare.

More recently however the term has been used to describe a group of highly ornamental offerings made for an aesthetic purpose but in slightly larger numbers. The magnificent Erard you see here is from this latter category. In the Vernis Martin style this piano is a tribute to the decorators art, with a rich green ground, extravagantly gilded ornament and delightful framed pastoral and romantic scenes. Completed in Paris in the first years of the twentieth century and transported to Erards London premises, it would have been sold and taken its place in a commissioned thematic interior scheme. Particular attention should be paid to the wonderfully preserved tableau under the top lid. This lot represents a very interesting opportunity and will appeal to those with discerning and individualistic taste.

Estimate £10,000-15,000
